Victor Valley team no more
(posted April 5, 2017 by Sam Signorelli)
After years of not wanting the team in the first place, Victor Valley High School decided to discontinue the team....I got word yesterday.
It is unknown exactly what beef they've had against the program, as it's been a successful one, but so long as Kent Crosby was there, it was protected.
With his departure a few years ago, however, the school was looking for any way to get rid of it.
From an email from Leslie Taft (after talking with Daniel Walker about it):
"VVHS has been trying to get rid of fencing even when Kent was teaching there.
Due to Kent's tenure, there was nothing the school could do. When Kent "retired" and moved to Lakeview school, VVHS saw it's
chance to deep-six fencing.
VVHS started putting more paperwork pressure on Daniel. For every fencing tournament trip Daniel took the kids to, the school
required mounds of paperwork.
Daniel questioned this as Kent never had to do it and no one at VVHS told him that all this paperwork would be needed.
VVHS just said, "well, that's the way it is," and with that, fencing ended at VVHS."
Obviously, a sad day for fencing in the high desert, but Kent and Daniel are working on a team at Lakeview Leadership Academy, which is a middle school, and James Gaier is starting a program at Mohave High School, so well see where things go.
In any case...Victor's loss.

Venue Changes
Posted on November 29, 2015 by jonesze
Unfortunately, this season has seen the denial of all fencing tournaments hosted by the LAUSD. Their Office of Risk Management has opted to decline the insurance policy provided by USA Fencing and therefore prohibited all SCSFL events.
This will impact three tournaments during the 2015-2016 season:
• Novice, 6 December
• Team Foil, 6 March
• State Championships, 15 May
Both Avant Garde Fencing Club in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills Fencers Club in Culver City have graciously offered to host the Novice tournament on December 6. The location will be finalized by Monday evening and new information will be posted.
Locations for the other two tournaments affected will be selected from SCSFL school campuses; information will be disseminated as it becomes available.
